Towel Day plus some good stuff

It's not every day you get to meet your future work colleagues via an international press conference, yet last Wednesday that happened to me. I had the distinct honor of being involved in this project for the last 1.5 years. It's also not very often that you can say you helped select people that will likely one day step on another celestial body. So first order of business, they all got official ESA towels to put over their shoulders. Just think, these people will really get to use their towels to fight off Vogons and the like.

And they were told the answer to everything is 42.

They'll start working, right here in Cologne at the European Astronaut Center in September 2009. You can probably meet them at the anticipated DLR Open House Day (20 September - more details to come as I know them).

I hope that all of you from Britain are as excited as Mr. Peake that there will finally be a Briton flying in space under a British flag. He may be the 4th Briton in space, but now he's doing it for the home team! Congratulations!

And if you just needed some funny links to help you through a Monday after an extra long weekend...

click the "Mullet Family" picture for some truly awkward family photos - and yes, I'm envious that kid has way more hair than I ever had or will ever have.

and another favorite - are you serious? the parents got in on this? I'm just glad the father didn't dress up like piglet and channel "Deliverance" memories... oops, too late. For the sake of all our decency, I chose to only link the banjo sequence - as that's creepy enough.

And finally, if you've got some time to kill, check out this really spectacular stop-motion animation of food killing one another in the ultimate food fight - I love the smell of BACON in the morning!
