Remembrance Day / Alaaf!

remembrance daySince moving to Cologne every year at this time of year I'm amused by the irony of different events that take place annually on the 11th Day of the 11th month at the 11th hour.

In the Uk and other (mainly commonwealth countries) around the world there is a dignified display of remembrance (remembrance day).

carnivalIn Cologne however at "Heumarkt" (albeit 11 seconds later) there's the start of Karneval (carnival).

I'm not at all suggesting that Karneval is inappropriate, should be toned down or moved to a different "slot". Karneval has a history that goes back hundreds of years, and whether you love it or loath it will be practiced long after we have shuffled of this mortal coil.

It was probably my relative newness to Cologne, plus that my first encounter with anything "Karneval" was a late dash to the workshop passing Heumarkt just as all the loonacy kicked off.

So every year (at this time of year) I spend a few moments to contemplate all life lost in conflict, and look forward to the elevated smell of K├Âlsch and sitting next to clowns on the tram.
